I just read a short but amazing article by Dr. Mike Bechtle. You’ll find it here. He drew a dot on a flipchart and asked one question both from a group of adults and a group of children.
What do you see?
Adults saw a dot, a black dot. Children saw a bug, a ball, a telephone pole from above, golf hole and the moon.
Why do little kids have such a vivid imagination? When I was a kid, I found a wooden stick and played with it for weeks. Every day the stick represented something different or the story around that stick has changed. You were a knight one day, a Jedi on the other day, you name it.
What is the reason?
There might be a few explanations. As little kids, we did not experience as much judgement as we do now when we are adults. We don’t create because we fear of what other people will say. Is my idea silly? Are my dreams too big? Will people laugh at me? What about the haters? Everybody says that the more things you do publicly, the more haters will send you bad comments.
Do it.
Let’s do it. Design is a great example as one of the most creative disciplines in the world.
How many times did this happen to you: you design something beautiful, a couple of weeks pass by, you look at it again, and now all you can see are the little cracks your masterpiece has?
It will never be as perfect as it was in that particular moment when you stood up from the table and had that great feeling. So now it’s rather a mixture of satisfaction and the fear of reactions. The more of the fear in this equation… You know the rest.
Since I discovered that everything around me was made by somebody, I started to look at artists from a different perspective. I am not an artist, and they may totally disagree with me, but to me, they are the ones who don’t have the fear to try. It could be design, music, photography, video. You name it.
I assume there was a moment of doubt in their lives while creating their very first thing. But once they managed to get through it, they started to change the lives of others. And now make a living doing what they love.
It might be just a little thing.
Is there anything you don’t like, or something that you’d call annoying? It can be just a little thing. Make it your side project.
Allocate time and a set up a small budget. Make it your mission for let’s say six months. Take a huge piece of paper and buy a marker. Put it on the floor or on the wall and draw. Draw and write every single day something.
Do it absolutely fearless.
Be crazy and have big dreams. Read books and blogs, show support to other small biz creators and learn from them. Build a brand. If you experience any negative reactions, just smile. But don’t be afraid to try.
Only people who don’t create anything will laugh at you. They are just envious. They wish to have your idea and your power to be that little kid without fear to try. You can’t let fear to be stronger than doing what you love.
