Tech is booming and more designers are jumping into entrepreneurship. Freelancing is another option that designers decide to take a plunge into and demand for design labor is growing too. How Design survey says that graphic design salaries are going up and there must be a way to manage design projects better.
Today I am interviewing Austin Price, designer and co-founder of Krit, project management tool for designers and developers. Let’s see how Austin tries to solve one of the biggest issues in design industry – communication among designers and clients.
What do you do and why did you create Krit?
I’m a designer from Columbia, South Carolina and co-founder/lead designer of Krit. At Krit, we’re building a project management tool for freelance designers that focuses on making it easier for designers to work with their clients.
We’ve talked to a ton of freelance designers small creative shops to try and figure out where the biggest problem was in their design process. Time and time again, it came back to working with clients and we found that the problems, such as scope creep, late payments, delays, etc., really revolve around communication issues.
We realized that there’s no good tool out there trying to solve these problems for designers and especially for freelance designers, so we made it our mission to do just that.
What has changed in the design industry in the recent years?
I think we’re seeing a lot more entrepreneurship in the design industry. There is a lot more emphasis on design in the tech world, and that’s leading to more designers founding companies instead of the traditional programmer and business founders. There also seems to be more and more designers making the jump to freelancing.
How design influences success of the business?
At Krit, design is an integral part of our success. With any business, I think the experience you create for your customer is a huge influence of the overall success of the business. For us, designing a great user experience is even more of a priority because our customers are designers.
What is wrong with young designers?
I wouldn’t say anything was necessarily wrong with young designers, but I do feel there is a tendency to get caught up in trends.
“Trends aren’t a bad thing, but for many young designers can get caught up in what’s trending and have trouble creating something solid with a foundation in long-standing design principles.”

What is so special about being a freelancer? Why?
Being a freelancer is special because it’s all you. It’s always great to be your own boss, but as a creative professional, I think it’s even better. You get the freedom to experiment and do whatever type of work you want to.
